When safety and building code compliance matter most, fire-resistant drywall is the trusted choice. At Cohen’s Drywall & Painting, we’ve been serving South Carolina for over 50 years with professional drywall installation, finishing, and painting. Our team installs fire-rated drywall in Berkeley County, Charleston County, Dorchester County, the Lowcountry area, Pawley’s Island, Myrtle Beach, and the southern coastal regions of South Carolina.

What Is Fire-Resistant Drywall?

Unlike standard drywall, fire-resistant drywall—sometimes called Type X or Type C drywall—is manufactured with added glass fibers and special materials that slow down heat transfer and provide additional fire protection. It’s commonly required in garages, utility areas, multi-family buildings, and commercial construction.

Types of Fire-Resistant Drywall

Type X Drywall

  • Typically 5/8” thick
  • Reinforced with glass fibers for fire resistance
  • Provides at least one hour of fire protection when installed correctly
  • Commonly used between attached garages, utility rooms, and multi-unit dwellings.

Type C Drywall

  • Contains more glass fibers and vermiculite
  • Offers longer burn-through protection than Type X
  • Often required in commercial projects, apartment complexes, and areas with strict code requirements.

Benefits of Fire-Resistant Drywall

  • Enhanced Safety – slows fire spread and increases evacuation time
  • Code Compliance – required in certain walls and ceilings by local building codes
  • Durability – denser and stronger than standard drywall
  • Peace of Mind – protects your home, family, and investment

Weight & Thickness Variations

  • Lightweight Drywall – easier to lift and install than standard gypsum board, while offering similar performance.
  • 1/4" Drywall – ultra-thin, used for curved walls or as a covering over existing surfaces.
  • 3/8" Drywall – thin, for patchwork or remodeling.
  • 1/2" Drywall – standard thickness for most interior walls.
  • 5/8" Drywall – thicker, stronger, and often used for ceilings or fire-rated assemblies.
